A couple of years ago, on a road trip into British Columbia, I played a course with a hole where the tee was on a bluff 160 feet above the fairway. It was a spectacular hole. But I couldn’t track the ball at all, and certainly couldn’t see it land (and the fairway just looked like a narrow ribbon). All I knew was that I hit the ball well and it started straight. So I just went down the fairway until I saw the ball. Three old guys were about to tee off, and the first said, “My eyesight is terrible, can you guys watch my ball and tell me where it goes?” The second guy said, “My eyes aren’t good either, so I need someone to watch mine as well.” The third old guy said, “Oh, my eyesight is perfect, I’ll watch your shots.” They all three teed off. “Did you see my ball?” the first guy asked the third. “Of course,” he replied. “So where did it go?” “I don’t remember.”
Having said all that, the hybrid is easier for me to hit than the iron when I want the ball to carry further and to roll more, especially on flat fairways with short cut grass. Well, one hopes that with a smooth swing that makes decent contact, the ball goes more or less in the intended direction. Most of the time, for anyone who plays fairly often, they can tell from the contact whether they have hit the ball okay – and that lets them then pick up the ball along the expected trajectory in mid flight. Although at 81, my eyesight is not good enough to always be able to track the ball till it lands, but if I know the direction it started, and whether it was curving one way or the other, I will have a pretty good idea where it will end up. But sometimes you just have to guess!
For good impact hit it on the center of the club called the “sweep spot” don’t try to scope it as then you will top the ball. There’s a tendency to try and lift the ball into the air, and another tendency to try to swing harder to get the ball into the air. Both are mistakes. Long irons have much less margin for error than short irons. The first thing you need to do is make sure you hit your short irons well. Can you hit your 7 iron consistently and crisply? If not, you’ll NEVER hit your 4 iron well. Once you’re hitting your 7 iron well, you can start to THINK about hitting your longer irons. I recommend working your way up one iron at a time. Eventually, you’ll learn that with the smaller margin of error, you need to be as smooth as possible. Your contact needs to be spot on. Fat or thin will kill you and your divots will be very shallow (just clipping the grass). The fact of the matter is that most people don’t hit long irons well and maybe never will. That’s where hybrids come in. Replace your 3, 4 and maybe even your 5 iron with hybrids and you’ll enjoy the game a lot more and be able to hit 3, 4, and 5 iron distances more consistently. How can you get your long irons higher? Pure contact which can only be learned by hitting every other shorter club purely. Hybrids are easier to hit than irons. But. There are instances when irons are easier to hit than hybrids, especially if you are a high handicap golfer like me. For instance, I find my irons are better at getting the ball out of the short rough just outside the fairway. There is less chance topping or chunking the ball when I use the iron. Another instance when the iron is easier to hit than the hybrid is when I need the ball to stop on the green. The hybrid causes more forward spin while the iron causes more back spin. So, when I’m hitting at a green that is lower than where I’m hitting or the green is lower on the back than the front, I want my ball to stay on the green, so I use the iron.
