I’ve heard good stuff about the later DS9 but when I stopped watching TV, DS9 was in a pretty esoteric and mystic season (way before the dominion war). Maybe I missed something good here. Also, I’ve read a lot of Star Trek novels. Hollow Men is the successor novel to the In the Pale Moonlight episode (DS9), which is still on my list to watch if I ever have the time. I quite likes TOS uniforms. Easily showed rank (on the cuffs of the sleeves), division (by color) and were neither too militaristic (looking at you Horatio Hornblower film uniforms) nor too casual. But with my liking of the old-school and clearly low-budget uniforms of TOS, I have to say (and this is difficult) that the Pike-Enterprise uniforms of Star Trek – the adventures of Michael Bur… *ahem* I mean Discovery, those look pretty damned spiffy. I also like the fact that the Starfleet insignia was now 3D, no longer fabric, and also served as a dog-tag.
If we remove all of the writers, all of the acting, the time difference between when each show takes place, and judge each Captain only on their characters, actions, and Starfleet protocol, the best Captain is Picard. With an extremely close 2nd of Captain Archer. I served in the Navy, which is the closest thing to Star Fleet we have currently. I met a few Commanding Officers, and plenty of junior officers. I know which traits are the sign of good leadership, and I can also tell who is thinking about the crew, the ship, and the bigger picture. A quality leader knows when to put each as a priority, and should be willing to break the rules when it is the best option.
Yes, I would love to see a twelve episode mini-series that would tell the history of the federation, connecting the dots that we have been teased with over the years. I want to see the stories of the people who took Earth from Khan and a post-World War III hell-scape to a planet that conquered scarcity. I want to see more about Zephram Cochrane’s development of warp drive. I want to see more of what happened after Picard and crew left Montana on April 5, 2063. Enterprise gave us some of the story, but I want it all laid out In front of us. I want to see the threads in the tapestry from Zephram Cochrane to Henry Archer and from Henry’s son Jonathan to Robert April and the twelve Constitution class starships.
